NV has its own unique atmosphere but it's not really GOOD. I don't even think it's possible to replicate the atmosphere of FO2. I played FO2 and this game is nothing like it in terms of atmosphere. "The atmosphere is great dude it's just like the first 2 gaems!!11exdee" I know it's just my opinion but I can't help but wonder how anyone can honestly say that NV is superior to FO3. Fallout 3 had this problem as well, but you'd think a spinoff from a supposedly superior company would be. You may find underground bunkers, but then you enter it and discover there's absolutely nothing other than raiders / X gang members there and it's basically exactly like the last dungeon you went into. Ok, sure, you can explore the rather small world provided to you but there's just nothing there. I loved Fallout 3 for the adventure and exploration aspects, something that NV lacks entirely.
You cannot pretend to be a slaver like you can in FO3.
Do you see where I'm going with this? The game does not allow for much roleplaying at all. I want to be a nobody who goes out to adventure, finds other people and places and have story around THOSE characters, not the PC. To put it simply, I couldn't care less about the storyline surrounding your character. The same cannot be said for NV, where you can't make two steps without the game STORYING you in the face. And there was indeed a popular mod like that. A simple mod that skips the intro and places you somewhere else in the world map would basically make the game 100% a pure sandbox experience. Outside of the vault you were just another dude surviving in the wasteland. In fallout 3 you could basically be anyone. Now I realise it is because the game is poorly designed and too linear. I was among the few people who actually preferred Fallout 3. For the longest time I didn't understand why everybody loved NV except me.
